FR Review:
Jane Ellsworth's take on Traditional style belies a veteran's touch: rather than overwhelm with patterns and knickknacks, she achieves a classic look through a few carefully chosen elements - her projects feel just so. A well-chosen toile, a soothing blue, a sun-faded antique rug - these are all balanced with good taste to make homes that feel "comfortable and complete, but not decorator-ey." References praise Ellsworth's style, but also emphasize the fun factor of working with her - they say she "strips away the hassles so you can focus on the enjoyable choices." A people person to the core, Ellsworth is commended for showing the same good cheer to contractors and clients alike - she greets challenges with the relaxed confidence of someone who has mastered their trade and simply "knows what to do."
Ellsworth studied design at Parsons, before accepting a position with Donghia, where she worked for a few years before joining up with Bruce Gregga in Chicago. She started her own firm in 1990, and has been helming projects ever since. She staffs an assistant for bookkeeping, but handles all design decisions herself. Most jobs are in the Westchester/Connecticut area, often for those making a move from the city to accommodate a growing family. Ellsworth is primarily lauded for her work there (said many CT residents: "She just gets the lifestyle here"). However, she has gone as far afield as Telluride, and is happy to tackle a pied-à-terre in Manhattan for those in need.
Clients weigh in favorably on Ellsworth's process, saying "everything just made sense." She charges an upfront design fee that covers all of the planning and shopping time, then a markup on product and antiques. The numbers are not the lowest in the book, but completely reasonable given her level of experience - clients say "you can just sit back and let Jane take care of things, that peace of mind is priceless."
Representative Client Comments:
"What was lovely about Jane is that she understood we needed to work with what we have - she got that completely." "She's a really good communicator." "Jane knows her stuff." "Her billing was very clear, you could compare apples to apples." "She understands what family life is like, sometimes it's just chaotic." "She won both me and my husband over, even though we're totally different." "She doesn't make 'statements' - she just has great taste."
