FR Review:
Walking into a David Kleinberg home, one is immediately overwhelmed by the plethora of shapely, elegant forms and simultaneously impressed by the understated yet layered grandeur. Everything has a place and a point of view. But first the flow and architecture is reconstituted--moldings, baseboards, mantles, doors are expunged of all extraneous detail and refit as handsome moments of definition. Then comes the ultimate paint job, with at least three shades of crème or gray on the dado paneling to further enhance the dimensionality and add structure to the space. Rugs, furniture, textiles, accessories, and artwork are chosen with extreme care for their sculptural qualities and ability to create harmonious interludes. This often means the real thing-- including original, neutral-clad Eugéne Printz, Jacques Adnet, and Clément Rousseaus. And last but certainly not least, the latest amenities are required: motorized window shades, a multitude of kitchen gadgets, and a bathroom wired for stereo in the shower. Clients who make it across the finish line are ecstatic with the outcome.

After sixteen years at Parish Hadley with Albert as his mentor, Kleinberg founded this namesake firm in 1997. In a very short period of time, DKDA became one of the most respected talent bases in the country, with plugged-in New Yorkers clamoring for his time. With a staff of 28, about 10 large commissions are taken on at a time and in-house architectural services are extensive. Recent Manhattan projects include a Park Avenue apartment, an UES townhouse and a TriBeCa loft. Other clients are located in Greenwich, Palm Beach, Little Rock, Maine, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Jumby Bay, and London. They include notables Scott Rudin and Jessye Norman. New projects tend to be substantial and elaborate. In addition to designing custom furniture for clients, Kleinberg has recently launched a rug collection with Patterson, Flynn & Martin.

The firm charges a standard design fee, classic retail on product, and standard oversight fees. Kleinberg can find the "most extraordinary antique table base and knows exactly what marble top will highlight it at half the cost of the original." Products tend to be the best available; when needed, the firm has extensive and extraordinary custom builders to fabricate the dream. Clients feel they get a masterpiece at a commensurate price.
