"I couldn't live without her," one designer told us. "Her" refers to Alix Perrachon, the woman behind Alix Unlimited. While living in Turkey, Perrachon learned about rugs and immersed herself in "rug culture." She started writing about kilims and antique Orientals and continued to do so in the States for prominent publications like Hali and Oriental Rug magazine. Gradually, she became one of the few "authorities" on rugs and established Alix Unlimited, a consulting firm. Clients call Alix a "navigator" in the "cliquish world of rugs," a liason between the client and the source. Decorators swear she has saved their clients thousands of dollars because Alix can get the rug directly from the manufacturer or a dealer for an "insider's price." Dealers, manufacturers, art collectors and auction houses are some of Perrachon's sources.
Perrachon also does appraisals (and will even send a certificate) for clients thinking about buying a rug as an investment or after flood or water damage. Customers rely on the firm to find, shop and appraise any kind, size, or color rug for any type of budget. Pricing is a case-by-case basis--either a retainer fee or a 25 percent handling fee (after all purchases) will be billed to the client. References across the board agree Perrachon is "one-of-a-kind," professional and knowledgeable about her craft.
