FR Review:
Sources say James Schettino has an "affinity and exemplary talent" for designing equestrian-related projects on rural farm-like sites. Schettino, whose style has definite classical overtones, has a reputation as a "master of making new things look old." But when he's not on the farm, we're told Schettino employs a sophisticated handling of rugged waterfront sites. When it comes to materials, clients say Schettino is shingle crazy: He uses shingles for facades, roofs and just about anywhere else he can put a shingle--as long as it adds to the design. Clients most often approach the architect with projects having classical roots--including variations of Shingle style, period homes and Colonial Revival.
Schettino, a graduate of Clemson, started this small firm of five in 1972. He and his staff take on about 25 projects each year, half of which are major endeavors with construction budgets ranging from $1.5 million to $5 million. Most of these projects are large high-end custom gut renovations to single-family homes. However, for repeat clients, the firm will do much smaller projects. Schettino stays close to home, working mainly in Greenwich and New Canaan in order to maintain his frequent site visits, but has worked in the Hamptons and South Carolina. The firm charges a lower fee based on a percentage of overall construction costs.
