FR Review:
With a gentility of design expression and a desire to please, John Roch and Gary Chase are quickly establishing an appreciative audience. The pair, with their thoughtful and restrained placement of objects and a limited use of fringe, is able to maximize the look and simultaneously maximize the budget. Creative with flea market finds and inherited treasures, there is a sense of period authenticity and "correctness" achieved with a $500 settee and the best fabric available. They are said to be excellent listeners and to attentively prevent the clients from making mistakes.
Established in 1996 after Roch successfully attracted potential clients' attention at a Southport showhouse, the two constitute the firm. About six to eight major and several smaller homes are developed at a time. Comfortable in a broad range of historically based styles, from Neoclassical Georgian to Tudor to Moderne, the team works to achieve the client's vision.
Confirmed Luddites, there is not a computer in the office. All the paperwork is lovingly written by hand on engraved stationery, bespeaking a bygone era. Equal care is taken with their client relationships, which are said to be 80 percent repeat. Working incrementally, with a Low product commission and a Reasonable hourly rate, customers feel they are well worth the cost.
Representative Client Comments:
"They are frick and frak. You get two opinions and a balance of thought for the price of one." "When we go shopping, we have so much fun that the clients of other decorators secretly ask me for their phone number." "They assume the client is smart." "John and Gary have gotten so popular that they are now able to be quite selective about whom they work with." "They do not want to be the biggest decorators in town or to make a fortune. They are just happy to improve their customers' lifestyles."
