FR Review:
There is no doubt that the firm's clientele leans toward traditional design, but insiders say Kroeger Woods enthusiastically welcomes highly modern projects. We're told the architects are drawn to older, traditional materials used in traditional ways--such as masonry and stonework done in the old-world manner. These self-described "contextualists" create site-specific and client-specific designs that fit into the landscape and take full advantage of the unique aspects of the locations. Each home is said to be "nonimposing and uniquely different." For those whose lifestyle hinges on the incorporation of outdoor living with the indoor aspect, Kroeger Woods is said to be "incredibly talented at creating courtyards that move through the site and slowly develop an implied understanding of time and place."

Kroeger Woods currently has six employees, led by Keith Kroeger, who holds degrees from Princeton and Yale, and Leonard Woods, who has degrees from Washington and Yale. This duo has worked together since 1981 and began a partnership 1990. The firm takes on about 20 projects each year, with renovations starting at $150,000 budgets and new homes that start at around $1 million. However, despite the cache that comes with working with this firm, we're told the principals will work "with anyone who's interested in fine design and realistic about what it will cost."

This "anti-ego, laid-back" group of architects is said to hold their client relationships on high, looking for a working chemistry, collaborative relationship and an approachable aura. The firm has completed projects from Aspen to Maine, but the bulk of its commissions come from Fairfield and Westchester counties. Kroeger Woods charges a standard fee based on a combination of percentage of overall construction costs and hourly rates.

Representative Client Comments:
"The whole thing was drawn and laid out in such a way that it was a very logical and personal process--it's wonderful." "I admired their attitude that restrictions sometimes bring unique results and I believe we really achieved that due to the design challenges we put forth." "It's an intelligent, logical approach." "They really had a willingness to work with us and they made the extra effort to understand what we wanted--and it ended up being quite unique." "Very accommodating and easy to work with." "We're absolutely thrilled, the house is just fabulous."
