FR Review:
Alan Wanzenberg is one of a handful of New York architects to be informally knighted by "those that know." With an understanding of the history of his craft, Wanzenberg's classical style also reveals his appreciation for proportion and scale, without ever looking formulaic. Adept at developing "wonderfully understated" craftsman detailing that is driven by the client's taste and the context of the project, there is always a special twist. The architect is also receptive to more modern projects, which he has done with success. Known to have "a personal connection" to his work, Wanzenberg is driven by "intellectual pursuits in design."

After graduating Berkeley and Harvard (M.Arch.) and working for three years with I.M. Pei, Wanzenberg started Johnson & Wanzenberg with his longtime collaborator, the late Jed Johnson. Several years later, the architecture side became an independent entity, and now Wanzenberg and his 16-person staff also offer interior designs, which range from updated traditional to more contemporary. The firm's commissions tend to be large-scale projects, for which budgets average $1.5 million to $3 million, but Wanzenberg has been known to do much smaller jobs. Residential is the sole focus with commissions mainly in New York City and the regional area. The firm takes on equal numbers of city renovations, historic restorations, and new single-family homes. Insiders say Wanzenberg takes great interest in the detailing of libraries, kitchens, and bathrooms, where his design skill truly shines.

Sources tell us Wanzenberg is a man of integrity, up front about costs and budgets so that money doesn't become an issue in the design process. Described as a "big time client advocate," Wanzenberg has been known to meet with a potential client four times before taking on a job in order to fully understand the client's needs. The firm charges standard fees based on an hourly rate with a percentage cap. AD 100, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2014. Elle Decor A-List.

Representative Client Comments:
"Alan very much enjoys engaging his clients in the intellectual process." "Charming." "He is the psychological leader of the substantial interiors group with a strong interest in that area." "There is a distinct penchant for American and English Arts & Crafts." "Alan is clearly involved in the overall, but not really the details." "The net price of all product is shown on the bills, which gives me great comfort." "Alan and the team are on your side." "Alan took the longest time viewing the site and developing the plans to make sure he got it right." "There was an audible sigh of relief from the locals when the house was built, as Alan was respectful of the neighborhood." "Alan is so thoughtful, and a softspoken gentleman. But he absolutely gets it done."
