FR Review:
Tailors of "very handsome," "cutting-edge" design, Peter Shelton and Lee Mindel, FAIA, are known to "examine a polarity between modernism and traditional architecture" in their work. References laud the pair's ability to seamlessly integrate clients' romance with classical American icons and a contemporary clarity to create refined, controlled spaces that are minimal yet rich in detail. While not characterized by a signature style, after two decades in business the firm is generally recognized as conservative modernists. It is intimately involved in the interior design of its spaces, often creating custom furniture and lighting schemes that are said to be "brushstrokes of the larger plan." Clients report partners Shelton and Mindel are "smart, likeable, forward-thinking" architects who "exhibit zero attitude." The firm is also highly respected throughout the building and design professions. While we hear the rigor with which the firm pursues the realization of its design vision sometimes leaves less regard for creature comforts, clients say there's no question they feel at home in Shelton and Mindel's highly original, deft architecture. Both began their studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Shelton graduated from Pratt in 1975 and then joined Edward Durell Stone and later Emery Roth & Sons. Mindel graduated from Harvard in 1976 and worked for Skidmore, Owings & Merill and then Rogers, Butler, Burgun.

The firm currently employs about fifteen people and has received many tributes, including sixteen AIA awards and a place in the Interior Design Hall of Fame. The firm also designs products for Waterworks, Nessen Lighting and V'Soske. The firm charges a flat percentage of the overall construction to cover both their architecture and design fees.
