FR Review:
A master of the sleek, yet soothing, Peter Carlson is a creative force pushing toward the future of interior design. With a love of furniture design, Carlson's forms are elegant and streamlined, sinuous and sensual. Proportion and line take a leading role over the palette that is often monochromatically interwoven into the architecture, but functionality and quality is always a major consideration. Curved wall units full of custom storage may stand near Fortuny-covered chairs and an 18th-century Italian reeded settee. For his Connecticut clients, Carlson can do a toned-down version of chic.
After studying theatre in college and briefly working as an actor, Carlson established his design firm in Stonington in 1980. With four assistants, about four major and several smaller projects evolve at a time. Generally, a quarter of the work is done in the local area. Client service is a very high priority, with Carlson reportedly being highly available and even buying the linens and stocking the fridge upon request. It is not unusual for Carlson to complete three or four projects with a longstanding client.
