FR Review:
According to sources this large architecture firm works and "feels" like a small one. First, this fifty-person office is divided into two studios--residential and commercial. The residential studio has twenty employees, yet takes on only six to eight projects each year, devoting the time and attention needed to uphold a lofty standard of detail and design diligence. Insiders say regardless of the style, Roger Ferris and his able staff "really dot all the ‘Is and cross all the ‘Ts.'" From its stark minimalist to Shingle style to "green" creations, the firm is recognized not for a style, but for excellence in design--and has seventeen AIA awards to prove it. Ferris is widely know for producing some of the best construction documents in the industry.
Residential work is split evenly between new-home design and large-scale renovations--however, the firm is selective about commissions it takes on. Those with very small projects should probably shop elsewhere, as Roger Ferris + Partners takes on projects starting at $1 million and topping out at $20 million. The firm works mainly in Westchester, Fairfield and New York City, but has completed projects as far away as L.A. and the Bahamas.
Principals of the firm are Roger Ferris who has a Master of Architecture from Harvard, David Beem who has a degree from RPI and Robert Marx who has a Master of Architecture from Texas. The firm also has a 30-person commercial design studio, handling high-end retail and office spaces as well as country clubs. The firm charges a slightly higher than standard percentage of overall construction costs.
Representative Client Comments:
"He really wants his work to matter." "Is not interested in leaving his fingerprint on the project, yet definitely leads the way with regard to design." "Roger is very exacting, definitive and upfront." "You couldn't get me to move out of this house for all the tea in China." "The columns seem to be floating right out of the yard." "His design is bold without being overpowering. Subtle and sophisticated at the same time." "I wouldn't even talk to another architect."
