FR Review:
With a strong knowledge of the most sublime traditions in interior design, Markham Robert creates homes of timeless and gracious appeal with a modicum of the delightfully unexpected. A sumptuous neutral background may be a foil for a blood-red felt table edged in parchment white, brandishing delicate ostrich eggs. Classical architectural bones are a necessity with radiant wit adding appeal. Clients may come to the party with family heirlooms or seeking a fresh start. Roberts will insist upon a minimum of one or two fine antiques and an exquisite paint finish, with the rest dictated by budget. Supporters consistently say the result is the very definition of chic.
An art history and architecture major at Brown, Roberts embarked upon his design career after working for Mark Hampton for five years. In 1997, Roberts began an independent firm, now with six others including two project managers and a licensed architect. Two or three major projects are taken on at a time, with many smaller undertakings completed for past clients. About half the work is Upper East Side and suburban based (Greenwich, Rye, Katonah), with the rest across the United States. The entire team is consistently complimented for its well-honed organizational skills, with Roberts as the primary client contact.
The firm takes a good-sized design fee to start and Classic retail on product, but it charges no hourlies and low workroom markups. An array of amazing-to-outstanding sources is used depending on budgets, with Roberts coaching the lesser vendors to deliver fine goods. He is particularly applauded for his creative abilities with younger family clients, designing pieces which are simultaneously functional and fanciful, and rugged enough to hold up to the PB&J set.
