FR Review:
Appropriate scale, harmony of light and crystalline placement are the trademarks of Mathew Smyth. Remixing the historically relevant with modern elan, rooms are streamlined with fine antiques and original thought. Clients, peers and the trade speak with great affection for the designer, his general good judgment and accommodating nature. Architecturally, his design plans are said to be very clear and helpful giving the client a visual for informed decision making. The firm is small with clients receiving Smyth's full attention. Many projects have been completed in the regional area in the last few years including homes in Greenwich, Westport, Rye, Bedford, Westport and New Canaan.
After studying at FIT and spending five years with David Easton, Smyth started his own firm in 1987. He often decorates second or third residences, and many of his new customers are family referrals. He is willing to do small projects for interesting new clients but usually undertakes complete renovations. Smyth charges a Standard design fee and a Reasonable markup on product. All bills include the net costs. He can work within a budget and offers a wide range of product possibilities.
