FR Review:
Baker Batchelder's style is "traditional, with experience in every kind of American architecture" with recent forays into more modern influences. The vast majority of the firm's work is in Fairfield County, although it has completed homes in Washington, DC, Florida and Nantucket. Sources tell us the architects will tackle anything from "one-room renovations to remaking the total home." The firm's principal, Linda Batchelder, is known to be a "control freak in a good way," handling all aspects of the project, right down to the drafting. Insiders say she is sensitive to the zoning and wetland regulations of the area's coastal communities and the stringent rules of its historical districts.

Batchelder, who holds an architecture degree from Penn State, joined the firm in 1986 and became a partner in 1992. Clients praise her for painstakingly selecting materials that "are durable, reasonably priced and look good." The firm has a reputation for working well with contractors, and it's a good thing, because they are said to "spend an awful lot of time on the site during construction." Baker Batchelder typically has about eight active projects at any given time, budgets generally come in between $300,000 and $1.5 million. The firm charges standard fees based exclusively on an hourly basis.

Representative Client Comments:
"The home is such a retreat for us--when we walk in the door, our blood pressure immediately drops." "They're very well versed in historic architecture, but they add distinguished contemporary ideas to their design." "An amazing sense of detail--It's not fussy architecture, but you can bet all the detail is right there." "We bought a piece of property partially because we wanted to work with them again." "We had to wait for them to get to us, but when they're available, they're fully available."
