FR Review:
We are told that Frank Welles "puts art back in floors." A fine-arts painter, Welles was born in Mexico City, raised in New York and was educated in France and at Duke University. It was in the late 1960s that Welles "fell in love" with wood and began the self-education process that would establish him as one of the leading authorities in wood flooring and specialty finishes. Being dissatisfied by the finishing products currently available in the market, Welles discovered that tung oil brings out the beautiful "hand-rubbed patina of aging wood." Today, his company markets the Sutherland Welles Ltd. label and restores, installs, finishes and sands hardwood floors.

The company works mostly in Westchester, Greenwich, Easton, Weston and the Hamptons. The Frank Welles client list reads like a who's who--Richard Gere, David Easton, Eric Smith, Hobbs Construction, Linda Douglas, Mimi Horton, along with other prominent residential clients and celebrities. The firm has also done some work for the New York Historical Society and helped restore the Vanderbilt House (circa. 1918). Pricing is usually per square foot and projects usually start at $30,000.

Sources tell us Welles is an artist in every way. Some say that he is a joy to work with and is very knowledgeable, while others describe the experience with the "eccentric" artist as "not the smoothest, yet not the most turbulent." Although a Frank Welles floor does not come cheap, everyone across the board agrees that it is definitely worth every penny.

Representative Client Comments:
"Very well qualified at what he does." "The floors just sing to you." "Superb use of color." "Quite difficult to reach at times, as he gets very busy." "The floors look like they've been in the house forever." "Eccentric." "The person to call for authenticating old wood."
