FR Review:
This small but prominent firm is sought after by interior designers for more than its stunning libraries. Keats & Waugh is also coveted as a source for custom built-ins, armoires, cabinets, bookcases, furniture, children’s rooms and entertainment units. We’re told that Keats & Waugh excels at complicated jobs, a recent example being a château in New Jersey with children’s rooms, painted and stained finishes, distressed cabinetry, doors in archways, master-bath vanities and decorative painting (the last done by an associate). While the firm has worked in the Hamptons as well as Westchester and Fairfield areas, most of its work is in Manhattan and the affluent New Jersey suburbs.

The firm is owned by Bill Keats, a “nice, chatty” guy and an honest communicator. Keats stepped into millworking after studying oceanography and serving as an officer in the Merchant Marines, and is self-taught. He has clearly taught himself well, as the firm is in high demand. This means that Keats is sometimes backed up with work, but sources say he is straightforward about scheduling and reflects constraints in his initial timetables, which go off like clockwork. The fi rm’s size allows Keats himself to keep control over the quality, which is said to be top shelf.

Keats prefers to work through designers and architects, but can provide designs and drawings for smaller projects. We hear that Keats’ costs are average. The firm’s satisfied customers frequently request additional work after the completion of the original project.

Representative Client Comments:
“Bill is meticulous and reviews each detail so there are no surprises.” “If he’s available we use him.” “He doesn’t take on more work than he can do, which means he isn’t always available, but he is always true to his deadline.” “Returns calls, calls with questions and suggestions, discusses detail.” “Price base is excellent.” “We are absolutely satisfied and continue to use him. He’s one of our primary people.”
