FR Review:
Sources tell us Dean's greatest attribute is his "sensitivity of time and space and the historical aspect of architecture," with a particular knack for renovations of landmark buildings. Possessing a "scholarly take on style," Principal Robert Dean's aesthetic is firmly rooted in the traditional vein with an interest in preserving the design ethic of the original structure. Dean is known to have an eagle's eye for rich woods and the rugged beauty of fieldstone, selecting materials that are appropriate for the site, client's lifestyle and budget. Sources say Dean makes an effort to "enhance the historical environment rather than disrupt it."
At any one given time, Dean will have about twelve active residential projects, mostly renovations or additions with a few ground-up homes. While his commissions generally command significant budgets ranging from $1 million to $5 million, insiders tell us Dean is extremely accommodating for repeat clients, doing much smaller projects in the name of sustaining the relationship. On top of that, Dean is said to "flat out be one of the nicest guys you'll meet."
Dean, who holds architecture degrees from Penn and Columbia started the firm of eight in 1986 after working with some of architecture's most notable firms, including Robert A.M. Stern and Philip Johnson. The firm charges a standard percentage of overall construction costs.
Representative Client Comments:
"Rob is just so easy to work with--he doesn't lock into a certain plan and say that's how it's going to be." "You'll have a conversation with him about the design and he'll come back in minutes with drawings." "Such wonderful detail and craftsmanship." "He keeps the integrity of the structure and it's simply stunning." "Rob knows how to use clever and creative ways to get the most out of the space he's working in."
