FR Review:
Stephen Tilly "does really good design work that lasts," sources tell us. It is this long-lasting and timeless design that has clients clamoring for Tilly's services. With an attentive approach to client input and a habit of hanging around construction sites monitoring contractors, Tilly is known to see each project through to the end. The architect's style is difficult to finger, but is said to be "21st-century personified." We're told he is "traditionally sympathetic" to existing structures during renovation but is well-versed in the technology of everyday living. His designs are described as "warm, but clean and spare."
Tilly employs environmentally friendly technologies in his homes that are known to be "closely related to the landscape and beautifully planned." Sources say that while Tilly may at first come across as soft spoken and reserved, the architect "loves talking about design and is intuitive and extremely thoughtful." Tilly and his staff are said to handle the difficult rocky and hilly sites across the Hudson Valley with ease. Tilly established the firm, which currently employs 21, in 1985.
The firm takes on about six substantial projects each year, and most are large-scale renovations. Construction budgets range from $400,000 to $5 million, with an average budget of about $1 million. Tilly earned a Master of Architecture degree from MIT. The firm charges a slightly higher than standard percentage of overall construction costs.
