FR Review:
This highly regarded firm is said to work within the context of the site or existing structure with talent and ease. Clients appreciate the manner in which the firm builds and maintains relationships, creating a loyalty that keeps the vast majority of clients coming back for multiple projects. The firm generally accepts single-family, new-home construction projects ranging from around 1,200 square feet to upwards of 8,000 square feet and major gut renovations. The majority of the firm's projects have substantial budgets that reach multimillion dollar proportions, but they will also do smaller projects with modest budgets for repeat clients. The firm does institutional, commercial and residential works that, we are told, bridge modern and traditional idioms.

Partners Harry Buttrick, Mary Burnham and Jeffrey Murphy each bring extensive knowledge gained from working on projects for some of New York's most treasured institutions. Most of the firm's work is done in New York, Connecticut and Florida, although it has also completed projects throughout the US, Europe and Africa. The twenty-person firm takes on twenty five to thirty new projects each year and offers a complete range of architectural, planning and interior design services. Buttrick has worked as an architect in New York for 40 years--he previously founded Buttrick, White & Burtis. He holds multiple degrees from Harvard. Burnham (Buttrick's daughter) was principal of her own firm for six years and holds degrees from Penn and Yale. Murphy practiced as principal of his own firm for seven years after working with I.M. Pei and Gwathmey Siegel & Associates. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and an Master of Architecture from Harvard.

The firm charges a higher hourly rate or percentage of total construction costs and structures proposals to meet the needs of its clients. Clients strongly recommend them as one of the only firms in New York to bring an "institutional memory" and distinct awareness of historically based traditions and "upscale nomenclature" to a project with classical proportions.

Representative Client Comments:
"We just love working with this team. They are thoughtful, kind, considerate and masters of their craft." "They understand what is ‘correct' and aim for the highest standards." "They renovated our historically based apartment, and it is as fresh and thoughtfully conceived as the original design was 80 years ago." "They can do traditional or contemporary, whatever is appropriate." "Harry's strength of character is reflected in his architectural work and in his client base."
