FR Review:
"Articulate," "enchanting," "supremely talented"--these are just some of accolades heaped upon Mario Nievera. He has come a long way from his youth, when he redesigned his neighborhood with LEGOS, to the present, when he works on $20 million estates. After graduating from Purdue University in 1987 with a degree in Landscape Architecture, Nievera went to work for Boston-based Morgan Wheelock, where his drive and exceptional work quality quickly gained him notice. By 1993, he had become principal and vice president of the firm, working out of its Boston and Palm Beach offices. In 1996, he established his own firm in Palm Beach, which now showcases his vast skills and artistic vision in work across a broad spectrum of styles from exotic tropical paradises and sumptuous Provencal gardens to Manhattan rooftop terraces.
Nievera’s designs, created in concert with the vision of the homeowner, architect and/or interior designer, generate a harmonious aesthetic between interior and exterior spaces, a “unique identity" that some have likened to “outdoor rooms.” We hear that these spaces emphasize his strength in hardscape design and water installations as well as his proclivity for ornate, and at times overwhelming, plant installations. Though Nievera’s primary focus is the “concept” of the design development stage, providing a vision and direction for his team, he also appears at the beginning of the project and ensures its proper execution during the final stages.
The design-only firm consists of nine employees, including vice president and partner Keith Williams, CEO and co-founder Louis Deither, an office manager, four CAD/design associates and a senior design associate. With offices in both Palm Beach and New York, the team staggers between fifteen and 20 projects at a time, each lasting between a year and two years--a consistent load that helps account for their modest-sized waiting list. The majority of the firm’s work is in Florida, with the remaining 25 percent divided among jobs in the Hamptons, the Bahamas, California, Newport, RI, and other locations nationwide. On average, construction costs are approximately $100,000 with the firm assuming fifteen percent of the total construction cost. Nievera also charges an hourly rate of $175 for designs and drawings.
