From its stark minimalist creations to classic shingle-style homes to environmentally green idioms, Roger Ferris and his team's work are recognized for their excellence in design—and they have seventeen AIA awards to prove it. Better known for striking, modern composures, the firm espouses a philosophy of innovation and collaboration that is at the core of the business. Insiders say regardless of the style, the firm "really crosses all the t's and dots all the i's," and is widely known for producing some of the best construction documents in the industry. References say the fifty-person office works and "feels" like a small one.
Founded in 1986, Principal Roger Ferris (M.Arch. Harvard), Partner David Beem (RPI), and Partner Robert Marx (Yale, M.Arch. Texas) win accolades from clients for their thoroughness and focus. The residential studio has twenty employees, yet takes on only eight to ten select projects each year, devoting the time and attention needed to uphold high standards of detail and design diligence. Thus, those with smaller budgets should probably shop elsewhere, as residential projects start at about $500,000 and top out well above that. Half renovation and half new construction, most jobs are in Manhattan, Westchester and Fairfield, though Ferris has also completed multiple projects in Palm Beach, LA and the Bahamas.
The firm also has a 30-person commercial design studio, handling high-end retail and office spaces as well as country clubs. The firm charges a flat fee, which is equivalent to a standard percentage of overall construction costs (which are generally high due to the clients' refined taste levels in materials). There is a substantial set of repeat clients.
