FR Review:
Best known for its period classical work, Fairfax & Sammons is strongly attuned to historical precedent and inherently trusted by clients to achieve the highest design standards. Favorite projects include a Corinthian-columned, fieldstone-clad, American Federal country house in Virginia and an Italian Renaissance palazzo called "Il Palmetto" in Palm Beach. Most homes reflect the Jeffersonian ideals of classical proportion inspired by 16th-century architect Palladio; even a recent Anglo-Caribbean commission has Chippendale railings and round oculus windows. The firm's strength is in "vernacular traditions," and they are said to bring a very sensible and functional approach while ensuring that the finished product is warm, inviting, and "beautifully crafted."

Principals of this 25-person firm, founded in 1992, are Anne Fairfax and Richard Sammons, a husband-and-wife team who both earned architecture degrees from the University of Virginia, where they met. Anne Fairfax is a trustee of the Royal Oak Foundation. Richard Sammons is a board member of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. Sammons previously worked for the ebullient classicist David Easton, and sits on the boards of Sir John Soane Museum Foundation and The Historic House Trust, in addition to helping to organize a salon dedicated to classical music, poetry, art, and architecture. The New York Times includes Sammons on its short list of antediluvian "Young Turk New Classicists." Their monograph, "American Houses: The Architecture of Fairfax and Sammons," was recently published by Rizzoli.

Fairfax & Sammons focus is primarily on traditional homes. Budgets for such projects start as small as $100,000 and have no upper limit, ranging from studios to mansions. The majority of the firm's projects are new homes, with the rest split between renovations and historical preservation work. The firm charges a standard percentage of construction costs, and there is a strong commitment to budget and schedule without sacrificing aesthetics.

Representative Client Comments:
"Anne and Richard are both lovely to work with." "Strong commitment to quality and architectural integrity, but are more than willing to take the ultimate decision from the client." "Richard is the design genius and Anne does everything else." "Richard has unerring eye for proportion." "You learn so much in the process." "They transformed my tiny West Village apartment by installing old French doors to the garden, making the space look 400 years old. It is magical." "I would not recommend for modern work (and I do not think they would take it on.)" "Very good management process--timing, budget, collaboration with contractor." "They stay three steps ahead of the contractor to avoid issues." "Very involved in the interior design as well." "I feel comfortable calling with a small question and they will quickly follow up." "Hire for an ultimate design experience."
