FR Review:
Fluent in the language of architecture and interior design, Alan Orenbuch is commended time and time again by esteemed decorators for his consistent ability to create a sense of space and light within a traditional framework. Particularly adept at coherence of line, he is frequently called in to combine two (or three) apartments into one, or to optimize a floorplan. The result is a home that feels infinitely more livable, but no less genteel - his spaces are full of daylight, authentic molding and graceful transitions from room to room. Though he can execute more modern looks, Orenbuch's clients are more likely to lunch at Swifty's than at the Soho House - the emphasis is on proper details and smart construction. Like a master tailor, Orenbuch knows that the beauty of the final product lies in how everything is stitched together.

A lifelong enthusiast of the craft, Orenbuch knew he wanted to be an architect at age six, growing up in New York. He studied architecture at Cornell in the Seventies, and after graduating eventually ended up as a draftsman for the late great Mark Hampton. Orenbuch opened up his own shop in 1998 and has kept it intimate ever since - he has two architects onstaff for drafting, but handles most details himself. Clients say he has the down-to-earth confidence and easy humor of an accomplished veteran, and that he is truly considerate of the way they live (when we recently spoke with him, he was in the midst of scouting apartments for a client with a three-year-old daughter, trying to find a property that would have enough space for her to play). Prices, based around a low hourly and a standard construction oversight cost, are a good value for Orenbuch's superior level of experience. Overall, he is recommended as a reliable traditionalist with a decorator's sensitivity.
