FR Review:
Dexterously blending inherited and found antiques, fine streamlined forms, and handsome counterpoints of provenance, Kathy Abbott impresses clients with her creative thinking and professionalism. Juxtapositions are a trademark, adding flair, freshness, and interest to the predictable. Fortuny in sherbet hues can cover traditional profiles, and contemporary art renderings may be placed in an otherwise traditional setting. All is done with a light hand and from a livable point of view.
With a B.A. in studio art and art history from Claremont College in California, Abbott has always focused on the aesthetic. In 1987, friends began asking for advice on interiors, and soon afterwards, a business was formed. Pursuing the trade with a clear focus, Abbott is a sole proprietor appreciated for her client attention and ability to "speak the language of the painters." References also credit Abbott for guiding a unique group of "incredible sources, especially craftsmen." Abbott does about five or six good-sized projects at a time. The balance of her work is done in Manhattan, Connecticut, and Westchester, but Abbott has gone as far afield as Rhode Island, Florida, and Colorado.
While many of her clients do not have a specific budget and Abbott is known to prefer excellent quality, she is said to mix it up--allocating enough for a fabulous sofa frame and saving somewhere else. A minimal contract fee is charged with classic retail on product.
