References describe Randi Barr as a capable industry veteran who has retained a sense of joy in her work: someone who can quickly and masterfully execute a finish, but who has the creative spark to add a small portrait of the family dog to a mural depicting Central Park. Her clients report discovering these “delightful and witty” hidden touches months, even years after the completion of the project. A lifelong artist, Barr began her decorative painting career in earnest after taking courses at the Finishing School in the 80s. After making a splash early on with a decorative painting project at Kips Bay (her first of many), she began taking on commissions for homes, spas and hotels. Her projects run the gamut, from wallpaper restoration to large trompe l’oeil finishes. Specialties include murals and cloud ceilings, though, in Barr’s capable hands, “cloud ceiling” could connote anything from a stylized cartoon for a child’s room to an elegant homage to Tiepolo for a dining room.
Barr works exclusively with materials that are both environmentally friendly and quicker to apply than more conventional mediums. A two-pronged benefit, this makes all of Barr’s projects both “green” and cost effective. She also has a knack for experimenting with more outré materials to achieve certain effects, like hundreds of tiny crystals on a night sky ceiling (though she also has a degree from the Bard Graduate Center in Art History and enough experience in the field to create more traditional finishes with ease and aplomb). Prices are definitely not cheap, though Barr’s clients report an excellent value. They recommend her as the rare creative professional who embodies both halves of the term: creative enough to enliven their homes with her talent, and professional enough to finish on time and on budget.
