FR Review:
While some architects fetishize the completed structure, Kate Platt and Hope Dana pay respect to and enjoy the fluidity and triumph of each step in the process. Maintaining a sense of humor, solving problems gracefully and a serious work ethic: this is how Platt Dana Architects defines its style. New construction leans toward a contemporary look with the focus on practicality and precision, not pushing for something fussy just to seem innovative. Many of Platt Dana’s work is in renovating brownstones and pre-war apartments; clients are impressed by the firm’s ability to maximize space and add light without losing the warm details of the original structure.
Platt received an M. Arch from UVA and Dana from Columbia. The two became friends while working for Skidmore, Owings and Merill and then opened their own firm in 1999. Along with six associates, the team takes on about ten projects at a time. Most work has taken place in the greater New York City region and is almost always residential, but Platt Dana is willing to work in any location and occasionally complete commercial and retail spaces. The team’s top criteria when choosing a project are the homeowners, not the scope. The purpose of their work is to improve the lives of others, and they want that process to be an easy one for everyone involved. Clients appreciate that they always deal with Platt or Dana (or both) firsthand and say the two are interchangeable. Although the firm charges a higher percentage of construction and bills average around $2.5 million, projects come in well under budget, which clients accredit to the firm’s honesty about unnecessary products.
