FR Review:
Held in high regard by clients and colleagues alike, John Surovek is regularly referred to as “the only person in Florida to see for American painting.” Much of this reputation comes from the success of his gallery, a 31-year-old Palm Beach institution that over the years has played host to heavy hitters like Norman Rockwell, John James Audubon, and Thomas Hart Benton. Of course, the gallery’s primary business is buying and selling, but when appraising for other purposes, Surovek has the advantage of having seen dozens of similar items pass through his halls, giving him a very tangible sense of a painting’s relative worth. Prior to opening his gallery, Surovek was director of the Daytona Beach Museum of Art. The academic rigor and intellectual curiosity associated with museum work still plays a part in Surovek’s current occupation: when executing appraisals, he has often sought to prove the negative (that the painting is not legitimate) thereby making his ultimate judgment all the more airtight.

If clients will bring a work to the gallery, Surovek will provide a free verbal appraisal of a painting’s approximate worth. If the client decides that a more thorough examination is warranted, Surovek and his associates will then research the provenance, quality, and probable market value of the work, ultimately providing an official document of appraisal. Their work is divided evenly between appraisals for estate planning purposes, charitable donations, and the satisfaction of pure curiosity. If the client wishes to commission the work through the gallery, Surovek recommends an independent appraisal to avoid a conflict of interest. Though the gallery has, on occasion, appraised work by European masters, its area of specialty is American paintings from 1850 to the present day. Surovek is a certified 25-year veteran of the American Association of Appraisers (indeed, for a period in the Eighties, he was running the AAA’s Floridian government). Described as friendly, affable, and deeply passionate about his work, he wins the highest marks from those who engage his services.

Representative Client Comments:
"The authority on American painting in Southern Florida." "An extremely friendly veteran who still has a voracious curiosity." "Everyone who works in his office seems like they love being there. It's always a pleasure to go in to the gallery, even if you find out your piece isn't worth what you thought it was!" "An elder statesman of the Floridian art scene. His word is as good as gold."
