FR Review:
Insiders say Gail Shields-Miller’s deft use of vibrant color tones works in perfect harmony with her more muted earth tones and rich materials. Comfortable in settings ranging from ornamental period interiors to clean and contemporary homes, Shields-Miller is well known for being versatile without being watered down. We are told that the firm excels in traditional detailing to create refined spaces without coming across as precious. Shields-Miller is known to incorporate colorful and exotic rugs to pick up on subtle hues throughout the spaces she creates, resulting in an understated continuity from room to room.
In addition to bringing together antiques, pottery and sculptures from around the world, the firm will also use refurbished materials from the existing space—such as fixtures and hardware—to add character, patina and a sense of history to renovations. Clients praise Shields-Miller and her staff for being “true collaborators” and encouraging active involvement from her customers from day one. Moreover, we’re told that her support staff is friendly, courteous and outright knowledgeable.
Shields-Miller assumed ownership of the firm in 1988, which was established by her mother in 1961 in Great Neck. Now on Madison Avenue, the office serves mostly a Manhattan clientele—and their second homes on Long Island and Fire Island. Shields-Miller, who holds degrees from Adelphi and Parsons, currently has a staff of five, which handles about ten new projects each year. A typical living room will generally carry a budget of $50,000—$75,000. The firm charges standard design fees and classic retail.
