FR Review:
As well as designing new modern work, Kevin Oreck is particularly credited for his astute restorations of period homes, bringing older spaces back to life and making them "wonderful centers of family occasion." "As classically fresh today as they might have been 40 years ago," Oreck's artful layouts successfully combine open space, historical integrity and modern practicality. Oreck is said to have a "heart of gold" and to bring a contagiously upbeat, yet calm attitude to collaboration with the client.

Established in 1990, Oreck's practice has only two on staff. Clients appreciate Oreck's full attention "from beginning to end" and tell us "he's caught a lot of mistakes before they happened." We hear he personally attends each meeting and keeps the contractors focused to the finish line. The vast majority of the ten to fifteen projects the firm does each year are residential.

Beyond Los Angeles, Oreck's designs can be found in San Francisco and Hawaii. Most projects seem to be modern, though sensitive renovations and additions to older homes are included as well, with new residences and various commercial projects rounding out the slate. Oreck’s work has been featured in publications such as Dwell, Interior Design, House Beautiful, Traditional Home, This Old House, 25 Beautiful Homes, Real Homes, as well as the books LEEDing the Way: Domestic Architecture for the Future , Today’s Historic Interiors, New Rooms for Old Houses, and Modern Glamour. The average new home runs about 3,000 square feet, and the firm is creative and nimble enough to work with a range of budgets. In relation to other class act firms, Oreck charges lower than standard fees that are billed hourly with a cap.

Representative Client Comments:
"Kevin is extremely diligent, detail-oriented and cost-conscious." "Equally talented in managing both the big picture as well as the smallest details." "Everyone thinks it is completely original even though most of it was gutted." "Kevin has orchestrated a seamless renovation for us, following the detail throughout the house." "Listened carefully to our wish list and did a remarkable job in walking us through the planning/design/construction process to achieve a program that exceeded all our expectations." "If I could have anyone it would be him." "So humble for being the most amazing person." "Kevin's assistance with the design was phenomenal." "It was such a plain-Jane house that he cleaned up and made amazing." "Kevin is a rare find because he is both incredibly talented and a joy to work with."

Project Description & Comments:
We had a new house built on a small lot with the goal of getting something that combined traditional elements with modern aesthetic. I wouldn't have been able to dream up a better home. Kevin works creatively, efficiently and so competently that a process that should have been a nightmare was actually a pleasure.

Project Description & Comments:
Kevin transformed our tiny, disjointed home into a beautiful and functional masterpiece. He provided us with the open space and modern amenities we needed, while preserving the character and charm of our beloved 1920's traditional. His thorough design, attentive approach to construction administration, and up-to-date knowledge of the city permitting process were invaluable. We can't imagine planning, enduring, and completing our project without him!

Project Description & Comments:
We hired Kevin to do a remodel and addition. His attention to detail and thoroughness from beginning to end were exemplary. He transformed our 1940's box house into a contemporary open floored plan that brought the outside beauty into the house. His aesthetic meshed with ours which made everything even better. He would liaise with the contractor in weekly meetings to make sure that that all the work was being done to his standard. He was a pleasure to work with.

Project Description & Comments:
Kevin is everything you want in an architect. When it came time to expanding our house, we sat down with Kevin and told him that we were looking to add a second floor in order for our girls to each have their own bedroom and for us to have a proper master bedroom. Kevin came back to us with two plans for adding a floor, but an even better plan for expanding out on the back of our house, staying on one floor. He didn't push this idea, but it was immediately apparent to us that his plan was the plan to go with – a fluid design that delivered on everything we wanted. Going forward, Kevin was meticulous throughout the entire process, always in communication with us, always available. He'd give his opinion but it was always up to us to make the decision. His taste is impeccable, though, and invariably the choices he offered up were spot on, both stylistically and budgetarily. In short, hire Kevin. You will not be sorry.

We hired Kevin Oreck to build our house from the ground up on a complex lot with a tight budget. Kevin's talent, creativity, knowledge, patience and communication skills resulted in a home that exceeded our expectations and was completed on time and within our budget. Throughout the entire process Kevin was a joy to work with. He listened and understood our needs and was able to maintain the integrity of the design and keep costs under control in the face of unforeseen issues that are a part of any building project. Kevin's demeanor along with excellent problem-solving, communication and organizational skills allowed him to work effectively and efficiently not only with us, but with our contractor, sub-contractors, city inspectors, Building and Safety Dept, City Planning, etc. Years later, we still look back fondly on working with Kevin to realize our dream home. We have and will continue to recommended Kevin Oreck to all our friends and family.
