FR Review:
Thornwillow Press is a printer, bookbinder and stationer for serious bibliophiles and discerning letter writers who value unique designs and hefty paper. This upstate artisan printer is best known for its exquisite leather book-binding services, custom Christmas cards, invitations, and a delightful range of motif cards. The 100+ motif collection has something for everyone, from a regal eagle in rich royal blue, to a quirky light bulb, to a flying gold pig so vivid that it appears to be leaping off the page. The magnificent detailing of Thornwillow's engravings, in spite of being transposed on the company's heavyweight vellum paper stock, speaks volumes to the high quality of its hand engraving capabilities and overall printing process.
A Thornwillow card is sure to send the best impression when giving thanks or making an announcement, and the prices certainly reflect this. A ten set of prefab motif cards can be had for just $40, but be prepared to shell out for customized items: custom stationery starts at $375, wedding invitations at $1,300 and a full leather book binding at $875. Customized products may be ordered online or over the phone. Thornwillow also recently began selling its wares at the New York St. Regis Hotel, in an "invisible" pop-up shop that blends in with the hotel library.
Thornwillow is the labor of love of Luke Ives Pontifell, who founded the company in 1985 while still in high school. Inspired by a printmaking course he'd taken, Pontifell began creating handmade books and perfecting the technique of hand binding in leather. Upon graduating Harvard, Pontifell began focusing on printing and bookbinding full time, eventually expanding into stationery as well. Today, the company boasts a collection of over 20 antique, vintage and modern printing presses. If there is a look or aesthetic a client is looking for, Thornwillow has just the apparatus to accomplish it.
Representative Client Comments:
"Letter writing isn't as common for me as it used to be, but when I do put pen to paper, it's nearly always Thornwillow." "I love the feel of their heavy paper stock." "My goddaughter loved the set of ballet slipper cards I gave her." "I'd love to have all of my favorite books rebound by them, but I'm afraid that would require taking out a second mortgage."
