Clean, classic architectural design with an eye to detail

FR Review:
Known for her upscale, transitional look and impeccable taste, Julie Kalberer is lauded for her managerial skills as well as her architectural talents. "If anyone could help you enjoy the process of home renovation, it would be Julie," says an enthusiastic client. Sources suggest that homeowners looking for clean yet inventive elegance couldn't do better than to hire this architecture firm. The four-person practice is known for skilled execution and excellent attention to detail and for its cost-effective and budget-conscious designs. Focusing exclusively on the residential market, half of the work is Manhattan-based apartments and the rest is on homes across the country (Watch Hill, Millbrook, Charleston, Seattle).

This widely published architect received her M.Arch. from Columbia University. She then trained with Peter Pennoyer before creating her own firm in 1990. Clients laud Kalberer for her lively, energetic and outgoing personality as well as her strong background in preservation. Both contractors and prominent local architects praise her "flawless drawings" and recognize her work as being of the highest caliber.

Fees are somewhat lower than the standard range, and clients report that she is excellent about offering a wide range of aesthetic and budget choices. Projects range from mid-sized to large residences. Clients deem the firm to be very reasonably priced with a few wondering if the firm actually charges enough.

Representative Client Comments:
“There’s no such thing as a ‘Julie Kalberer’ style house—her style is always refreshing and what the client asks for.” "Julie has a wonderful eye and gives practical advice, while always being professional, diligent and reliable." "Julie was able to keep the spirit of the-turn-of-the-century building in bringing my apartment up to today's style." “I work in the trade. I never stick with an architect for more than one project, in fact I often fire them. I’ve built two houses and done a gut renovation with Julie and plan on doing more. She takes my taste and what I want and makes it better.” "Came up with an innovative layout that both optimized the space and addressed the expense and timing constraints." “The look is clean but behind the walls it’s all about storage optimization. She really knows how to maximize space without compromising the look. It’s genius.” "They know how to produce complete and accurate drawings." "Always responsive to the questions, needs, and anxieties any project in New York entails." "Has a realistic budget and sticks to it." "Conscientious and honest." "Great project management. Julie knows how to get things expedited." “Wonderful to work with, never made us feel like we were being difficult, which I know we were.”

Project Description & Comments:
Julie and Phil Turino did an outstanding job with my home. They designed and overlooked the building of our new house in Bridgehampton, New York. They guided us with paint colors, accessories, etc. I often have people knock on my door to please take a look at the house. They were personable, reasonable, and gave us lots of options. I would not dream of doing another house or renovation without them.
