FR Review:
The DOG Store, despite its unassuming name, is a dog grooming business that caters largely to an “affluent and celebrity” crowd looking for high-end, personalized service. Owner Edward Alava “expects a certain level of excellence” in both his grooming services and his products. He aims to create a boutique experience at his cozy UES location by carrying unique items such as a collection of interesting dog figurines (finding the newest and rarest for the store's collection is a personal hobby of Alava's) beaded slip-on shoes for humans (featuring the endearing face of your favorite breed of course) and doggie carrying bags which he designs himself.
The grooming services – all of which are done in-store by two Mash Academy-trained groomers – comprises about three quarters of The DOG Store's day-to-day business, and covers everything “from a puppy wash to a show dog preparing for a photo shoot.” However, clients most often choose it for the sense of “elegance and luxury” and the feeling of “privacy and exclusivity” which it strives to provide for his customers. This commitment extends to the fact that Alava, who has been grooming in NYC for over a decade and has two Schnauzers in the show circuit, is always willing to use his contacts to connect customers with the breeder they are looking for. If you're on a budget, or don't know exactly what you want, this may not be the place for you. But if you're serious about your dog's styling and accessorizing – and are willing to pay a bit more to stand out from the crowd – then The DOG Store is definitely worth a look.
