FR Review:
If you’ve ever marveled at the workmanship on linens from the back of your grandmother’s closet, but found the styling a little dated, Julia B. products may be for you. Classic, vintage designs using modern colors characterize her linens, and there is also a unique custom element. Julia B.’s artisan embroiderers can not only monogram in a plethora of different styles, but they can also reproduce heirloom or new designs. All the stitching is by hand, and the embroidery is done in Vietnam and Madagascar where the French style is still prevalent. The only products made on machines are the towels and blankets.

Julia B. (aka: Julia Berger) began her career in fashion. She attended Brown University, and went on to work at Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, where she learned branding and developed a love of home accessories and handmade products. Berger went on to study textiles at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Florence. While living in Italy, she began to buy antique linen pieces, and in 2000 opened her own business selling custom linens to interior designers. Berger is the only designer out of a staff of four. Over half of her business goes to the trade, but individuals can make appointments at the Julia B. showroom in New York City and offices in Stamford, Connecticut. Retail products are also carried online and at shops across the country, and the company accepts orders by email, phone, web and in-person. Brides can register in Julia B. showrooms and offices, and the business will also take deposits towards registries.

Julia B.’s retail prices are on par with that of other custom linen companies. Bespoke work is expensive and varies according to the detail of the design. It is a three-step process that involves developing the artwork, creating a sample and a stitch out. Berger quotes each project and the client pays upfront. The delivery time for a small order from the boutique (for example a set of cocktail napkins) is three weeks. A complete bed or table set is six to eight weeks, and fully custom work is five months. We hear that Julia B. products wear very well because “if it’s done well and properly it holds up.” If you desire custom linens made the way they were two hundred years ago, Julia B. is one of the few places left that will satisfy.

Julia B. offers high quality, custom linens for the bed and tabletop. Her collection is edited with just enough choices! She is very good about providing samples and working together to create special pieces for clients.
